The Utah School
Employees Association (USEA) voted on Saturday, May 1, 2004 to affiliate
with the largest employee association in the country - the 2.7
million-member National Education Association (NEA).
The overwhelming
vote of approval came from the USEA Council of Delegates. The USEA
Executive Board recommended the affiliation to the Council of Delegates
after careful consideration of national options available to the
Association, including coalitions of associations and full service
national union/associations. USEA President, Nan Kirkpatrick states:
"The NEA was clearly the best option for classified employees in
Utah!"
The USEA Executive
Board negotiated direct affiliation with the NEA. Under the agreement,
the USEA will be a statewide local affiliate of the NEA and will not be
an affiliate of the Utah Education Association (UEA), NEA's current
state affiliate and the state's largest employee association. However,
with both the USEA and the UEA affiliates of the NEA, the USEA will be
able to work in partnership with the UEA on issues of mutual concern
affecting our respective members and on state and local issues affecting
the students of Utah's educational system.
USEA Executive
Director, Mike Hepner stated: "With the current services, benefits,
resources and infrastructure of the USEA, combined with the additional
resources of the NEA, the USEA will continue its proud tradition of
providing quality representation of Classified Professionals in Utah. It
is clear that no other organization will be able to provide the level of
service, benefits and expertise the USEA will provide to classified
school employees in Utah."
